FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What Is Addictive Behavior?

Addictive behavior is over-involvementwith substance use (e.g. alcohol, nicotine, drugs, food, etc.) or activities(e.g. gambling, sexual behavior, eating, spending, etc.).  We assume that there are degrees ofaddictive behavior, and that all individuals to some degree experience it.  For some individuals the negativeconsequences of addictive behavior become so great that change becomes highlydesirable.

How Is SMART Different?

SMART is not a twelve-stepprogram.  It is based oncognitive/behavioral methods, particularly Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy(REBT).  We think a personÕsreligious or spiritual beliefs are a personal matter that can be helpful, butare not a part of the SMART program. SMART teaches people practical, proven self-management and recoveryskills.

Does SMART Work?

Yes, if you are willing tohelp yourself.  Recovery takestime, patience, and work, but the tools offered in SMART Recovery can help makeyour efforts more productive. These methods have been proven to be effective and often produce resultsfaster than other methods.  Thebest way to prove it for yourself is to try it!

WhatÕs It Like?

SMART Recovery groups aresmall, allowing for cross talk, discussion, and practice of many specificmethods. The focus is on learning how to increase your motivation to quit, handling urges without acting on them, developing new ways of coping withproblems, and creating a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Is Abstinence Required?

We believe a permanentabstinence decision is the most rational, easy and hassle-free solution.  With the right tools and skills, mostpeople can quit and make it stick, without life-long struggle or dependence ona group.  However, we viewabstinence as a personal choice and relapse as a learning opportunity.

Is SMART Something New?

The idea that we largelycause our own feelings and behavior was known to ancient Greekphilosophers.  In 1955, Dr. AlbertEllis used this idea as a founding principle of Rational Emotive BehaviorTherapy.  Much research andclinical experience since then has proven the effectiveness of REBT.  SMART brings these powerful principlesand practices to a self-help group format.

How Much Does It Cost?

SMART Recovery is free; we pass the hat only to meetexpenses.
